Can a country founded on the idea that all of us are created equal accept Jesus’s admonition to see contention as the devilish delusion that it is?
Latter-day Saints see their faith as a receptacle of truth not just a dispenser of it, which explains the ease in finding so much that is “virtuous” and “lovely” in many traditions.
Will we continue the patterns of contempt and division in this new America? Or will we reach for something better?
The idea of an “equal partnership” between a man and woman in marriage is hard for Americans to understand – involving as it does not a “sameness” of proclivities or skills, but instead a profoundly interwoven union that reflects common burden-sharing.
Something goes into building community that is different than simply banding together with people we like or share an ideology with. They’re not the same!
